Ó Maolagáin

Ó MAOLAGÁIN—IO Mollegane, O Mullegan, O Mulghan, Mullagan, Mulligan, Mulgan, (Molyneux), Baldwin, &c.; 'descendant of Maolagán' (diminutive of maol, bald); the name of a Tirconnell family who were chiefs of Tir MacCarthainn, in the east of the barony of Boylagh, but seem to have been dispossessed and dispersed at an early period. At the end of the 16th century, the name, while most frequent in Ulster, was not uncommon in the other provinces. It is said to have been anglicised Molyneux and Baldwin in Donegal, the latter form being intended as a translation, i.e., Bald one. Ó Maoileagáin and Ó Maoileacháin (which see) are attenuated forms.
