Ó DÚNADHAIGH—IO Downie, O Downy, O Duny, O Dony, Dooney, Downey, Doney, Donney, Dunny, (Downing); 'descendant of Dúnadhach (belonging to a dún, or fort); the name of, at least, three distinct families: (1) Ó Dúnadhaigh of Siol Anmchadha, in Co. Galway, who are of the same stock as the O'Maddens; (2) Ó Dúnadhaigh of Corca Laoighdhe, in South-west Cork, who are of the same stock as the O'Driscolls; and (3) Ó Dúnadhaigh of Luachair, who were chiefs of Luachair, an extensive district on the borders of Cork, Kerry and Limerick. This family is still numerous in Kerry and Limerick, but in the former county, the name is sometimes incorrectly anglicised Downing. The name was also found in Ulster and Leinster.
