Mac CATHAIL—IVM'Cahall, M'Cahill, M'Cale, MacCall, MacCaul, MacHall, MacGall; Charles, Corless; 'son of Cathal' (battle-mighty, a common Irish personal name, anglicised Charles). A family of this name were followers of O'Kelly of Ui Maine, and the surname still survives in Co. Galway under the anglicised forms of Charles and Corless. Mac Cathail was, no doubt, also in use in other parts of Ireland, but its anglicised forms, especially in Ulster, cannot always be distinguished from those of Mac Cathmhaoil, which see.
