Ó MUIREADHAIGH—IO Murrey, O Murry, O Murrihy, Murry, Murray, Murrihy; 'descendant of Muireadhach' (seaman, mariner, also a lord); the name of several distinct families in different parts of Ireland. Of these, the Uí Muireadhaigh, or O'Murrys, of Mayo, Roscommon, Westmeath and Cork were dynastic families who anciently ruled over extensive districts, but they have all been long dispossessed and dispersed. There were also many distinguished ecclesiastics of the name. Ó Muirighthe is a common pronunciation. Compare with O Murrihy above.
