Ó MAOILCHIARÁIN—IO Mulchieraine, O Mulkerane, Mulkieran, Mulkearn, Mulkern, Mulkerrin, Mulheeran, Mulheran, Mulherrin, Mulherron, Mulhern, Mulkearns, Mulkerns, &c.; 'descendant of Maolchiaráin' (servant of St. Ciaran); the name of an ecclesiastical family who were erenaghs of Eaglais beg, at Clonmacnoise, and of Ardcarne, in Co. Roscommon. A branch of the family seems to have settled in Donegal sometime before the end of the 16th century. The name at that period was most frequent in Westmeath, Roscommon and Donegal.
