Ó BRÓITHE—IO Broha, O Brohy, O Broghie, Brofie, Brophy; 'descendant of B---------------'; written Ua Broigthe in the Annals of Ulster, A.D. 1165. The original patrimony of this family was Magh Sedna, in the barony of Galmoy, Co. Kilkenny; but they were driven thence into Upper Ossory, soon after the Anglo-Norman invasion, when their chief settled at Ballybrophy, in the present Leix. The family is still numerous in Ossory and the adjoining districts of Tipperary.
