Mac GIOLLA BHÁIN—IVM'Gilbane, M'Gillevane, MacGilvane, MacKilwane, MacIlwaine, McElvaine, MacElwain, MacElwane, Macklewaine, Gillivan, Kilbane, and, by translation, White, Whyte.; 'son of Giolla bán' (white, or fair youth); the name of a family of the Ui Fiachrach, in Co. Sligo, who formerly possessed the townland of Lisnarawer, in the parish of Dromard. O'Donovan found the family still in that neighbourhood, but the name was always made White in English. It is also a Scottish surname, usually anglicised MacIlvaine, but sometimes Whyte.
