Mac CRUITÍN—IVM'Crutten, M'Cruttan, MacCurtin, Curtin, (Curtis); 'son of Cruitín' (hunch-backed); the name of a learned family of antiquaries in Thomond, whose patrimony was Carrowduff, in the parish of Killaspuglonane, and Laghvally, in the parish of Kilmacreehy, Co. Clare. A branch of the family settled in East Limerick some time prior to 1600. Andrew MacCurtin, who lived in the early part of the 18th century, was one of the best Irish scholars of his time.
