LAFÁN—XIILanfant, Lenfaunt, Leffaine, Laffane, Laffan, Laffen, Laphin, etc.; Norman 'l'Enfant,' i.e., the child, probably applied to a person of guileless disposition; the name of old and respectable families in Tipperary and Wexford. James Laffan of Grayston was sheriff of Tipperary in the reign of Elizabeth; and in 1598, Laffan of the Slade (Slade Castle) was one of the principal gentlemen of Co. Wexford.
