FÚINSE—VIIIFounce, Fonce, Finch, Funge; a variant of Púinse, by change of initial P to F; compare with Fainín, for Painín, Fágán for Págán. There is a possibility that the origin is from the obsolete English word 'fonce,' a knowing, cunning person, but the few instances that we have in Irish records are without the article 'le' or 'the.'
