Ó Luachair

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

Ó LUACHAIR, Ó LUACHRA—IO Logher, O Lucry, Loughry, Loughrey, Lockery, Rush; 'descendant of Luachán' (white, pure); a corruption, according to O'Donovan, of the old Sligo surname Ó Luacháin; the name of a branch of the Ui Fiachrach, formerly seated at Rosslee, in the parish of Easkey. It is now common in Co. Mayo, where it is usually 'translated' Rush, from an erroneous belief that it is derived from luachair, rushes.
