Ó GAIRBHÍN—IO Garvyne, O Garven, Garvin, Garavin, Garwin, Garven, (?) Girvin, Girvan, (Garvey); 'descendant of Gairbhín' (diminutive of garbh, rough); a variant of Ó Garbháin, which see. In Co. Mayo, where this surname is very common, it is always anglicised Garvey, which would seem to indicate that the original form in that county was Ó Gairbhithín, a diminutive of Ó Gairbhith, which see.
