Ó GAIRBHEITH, Ó GAIRBHITH—IO Garvie, O Garvey, Garvey; 'descendant of Gairbhith' (rough peace); the name (1) of an ancient family in Co. Down, of the same stock as the Maguinnesses, who were chiefs of Ui Eathach Cobha, the present barony of Iveagh; (2) of an Oriel family who were anciently chiefs of Ui Breasail, in the present barony of Oneilland East, Co. Armagh, but dispossessed at an early period by the MacCanns; and (3) of a branch of the Ui Ceinnsealaigh who were anciently chiefs of Ui Feilmeadha Thuaidh, in the present barony of Rathvilly, Co. Carlow. The name is now well represented in all parts of Ireland. See Ó Gairbhfhéich and Ó Gairbhín.
