TANNCÁRD—VIII—Tankard, Tancard; 'son of Tancred' (a Norman personal name, Teutonic Tancrad, Anglo-Saxon Thancred, early corrupted to Tancard and Tankard); an old, but now extremely rare, surname in Ireland. In 1598 Tankard or Tancard of Castletown was one of the chief gentlemen of Meath. The name was in use at the same period in Co. Cork.
