SAMSÚN—VIIISamsun, Samson, Sampson; 'son of Samson' (a Biblical name in use among the Anglo-Saxons and Normans); the name of an Anglo-Norman family who came to Ireland about the time of the invasion and settled at Naas, in Co. Kildare, and at Callan, in Co. Kilkenny. Since the Cromwellian period, it has been found chiefly in the parish of Galbally, Co. Limerick, but is an old surname in East Limerick.
