SABHAOIS, SÁBHAOIS—XIISauvage, Savage; Norman 'le Salvage,' 'le Sauvage,' i.e., the savage, one of wild, fierce character; the name of an old Anglo-Norman family planted in 1177 by Sir John de Courcy in the Ardes of Co. Down. The Savages are frequently mentioned in the Irish Annals. They possessed considerable property down to the revolution of 1689. Savage is also an old surname in Kilkenny and Waterford; see Sabháiste.
