PONNS—VIIIPonz, Poyns, Poynz, Poyntz, Pounce Pointz, Punch; 'son of Ponce' (Latin Poncius, a not uncommon Norman personal name); an old, but rare, surname in Ireland; now found chiefly in Cork and Limerick, where the modern form is Púinse, which see. Poynston was the old name of the present Punchestown in Co. Kildare.
