Ó MAOLRUAIDH—IO Melrewe, Mulroe, Mulroy, Mulry, Mulrow, Melroy, Milroy, (Munroe, Monroe); 'descendant of Maolruadh' (red chief); the name of a family of Ui Fiachrach who were originally seated in the parish of Ardagh, in Tirawley, Co. Mayo. It is still common in Mayo and Galway, but sometimes anglicised Monroe.
