Ó GAIRBHEITH, Ó GAIRBHITH—IO Garvie, O Garvey, Garvey; 'descendant of Gairbhith' (rough peace); the name (1) of an ancient family in Co. Down, of the same stock as the Maguinnesses, who were chiefs of Ui Eathach Cobha, the present barony of Iveagh; (2) of an Oriel family who were anciently chiefs of Ui Breasail, in the present barony of Oneilland East, Co. Armagh, but dispossessed at an early period by the MacCanns; and (3) of a branch of the Ui Ceinnsealaigh who were anciently chiefs of Ui Feilmeadha Thuaidh, in the present barony of Rathvilly, Co.
