Ó FÓGARTAIGH—IO Fogartie, O Fogerty, Fogerty, Fogarty; 'descendant of Fógartach' (proclaimed, banished, exiled); the name of a family of Dalcassian origin, according to O'Heerin, who were chiefs of Eile Ui Fhogartaigh, now the barony of Elyogarty, in Co. Tipperary; sometimes changed, by the aspiration of the initial f, into Ó hÓgartaigh, which see; in West Kerry Ó Fógartha.
