Ó DUBHARTAIGH—IO Duarty, O Duhartie, O Dowhirty, Duarty, Doorty, Dooherty, (Doherty); 'descendant of Dubhartach' (black Artach, or compound of dubh, black, art, noble, bear, &c, and the adjectival suffix ach); the name of a family of the Corca Laoighdhe, in south-west Cork. The family, which has been long dispersed through Monster, is numerous in the counties of Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary, but often disguised as Dohertys.
