Ó CONAING—IO Gunning, Cunning, Gunning; 'descendant of Conaing'; the name of a branch of the Dal gCais who are descended from Donnchuan, brother of Brian Boru. Before the Anglo-Norman invasion, they were lords of Aos Greine, the present barony of Clanwilliam, Co. Limerick, and had their chief seat at Caislean Ui Chonaing, now Castleconnell, but were dispossessed, about the beginning of the 13th century, by a branch of the Burkes. The name has now entirely disappeared from Co. Limerick.
