Ó CÉIRÍN—IO Kearin, O Kerine, O Kerrin, Cairn, Kearin, Kearn, Kereen, Kerin, Kerrin, Cairns, Kearns, Kerins, Kerrins, Kerns, (Carey), &c.; 'descendant of Céirín' (diminutive of ciar, black); the name of a family who were anciently lords of Ciarraighe Locha na n-airne, in the barony of Costello, Co. Mayo, and doubtless of several other families in different parts of Ireland. In the 16th century, it was very widespread, and is now represented in every province. See Ó Ciaráin, with which it is synonymous.
