MAOILIR—VIII—Meyler, Myler; 'son of Meyler' (a Norman form of the Welsh Meilyr). The Four Masters, under the year 1205, mention a Maelir Mac Maelir, who took forcible possession of Limerick, and give the genitive case of the name as Maoilir, the Irish spelling having been probably influenced by the Welsh word maeliwr, a trader, with which it was supposed to be identical. The Meylers were an old Wexford family. In Co. Waterford, the surname is pronounced Miléir.
