Mac Giolla Chéire

Mac GIOLLA CHÉIRE—IVM'Gillykeyry, M'Gillicherie, M'Ilkerry, Kilkeary, Keary; 'son of Giolla Chéire' (servant of St. Ciar); once a common surname in many parts of Ireland, especially in Co. Cork. It has now almost disappeared, being probably disguised under the anglicised forms of Keary, Carey and Carr. Mac Giolla Cheara, which, according to Father O'Growney, is the Irish for Carr in parts of Co. Galway, is probably a corruption of the present surname.
