This surname originated in Co. Mayo, but in the 16th century it was common in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal. Many of the name at present in Ireland are, no doubt, of Scottish origin. The popular form was often Mac 'a Bhuidhe; hence the anglicised forms MacAvoy, &c.
