Mac EACHMHARCAIGH—IV—M'Cafferchie, M'Cafferkie, MacCaffarky, MacCagherty, MacCaugherty, MacCafferty, MacCaverty, MacCaharty, MacCaherty, (MacCarthy, MacCaffry), Cafferky, Cafferty; 'son of Eachmharcach' (horse-rider); a Donegal surname, now also common in Mayo, but often disguised under the anglicised form of MacCaffry. The local pronunciation is sometimes Ó Ceafarcaigh. The family is probably a branch of the O'Dohertys, among whom Eachmharcach was a personal name.
