HÁMONN—VIIIHamund, Hammound, Hammond; 'son of Heahmund' (an Anglo-Saxon personal name, Old Norse Hamundr, a name in use among the Danes of Dublin before the Anglo-Norman invasion). About the year 1174, Hamund, son of Torkill, was granted, on behalf of King Henry II, Censale and adjacent lands, held by him before the arrival of the English in Ireland. Families named Hammond also settled early in Louth, Meath and Limerick. See Hamon which is of a distinct origin, but cannot now be distinguished from Hámonn.
