GÚL—VIIIGule, Goule, Goole, Gole, Gold, Gould, Goold; 'son of Golde,' an Anglo-Saxon personal name, found as Goldus in Domesday Book. The earliest form of the surname in Ireland was Gule: John Gule was a member of the Dublin Guild-Merchant, A.D. 1226; and about a century later Maurice Gule was one of the townsmen of Kilmallock. The Goulds appear to have settled at an early period in the city of Cork, where they were wealthy merchants and long one of the most influential families. No fewer than thirty of the name appear in the list of mayors of that city.
