GEARNÚN—XIIGernoun, Gernone, Garnon, Gernon, Garlan, Garland, etc.; Norman French 'gernon,' 'guernon,' i.e., a moustache, hence the wearer of a moustache; a nickname which became a surname. Robert Gernon was one of the tenants-in-chief in England at the time of the Domesday survey. The name came into Ireland about the time of the invasion, and in the 16th century was common in Louth, Meath and Monaghan; but it has long been corrupted to Gearlún and then to Gearlann, which see.
