DONGÁN—VIIIDongane, Dongan, Dungan, Duncan; 'son of Duncan,' (the Irish Donnagán which was adopted by the Anglo-Saxons. Searle gives it in three forms: Duncan, Dunecan, and Dunechan; found along with a few other Irish names in Domesday Book. Compare with Colmán above). The Dongans settled in Dublin and Kildare. Walter Dongan was created a baronet by James I, and after the Restoration his descendant, Sir William Dongan, was advanced to the Earldom of Limerick. His estates, comprising 30,000 acres, were confiscated by the Williamites.
