De Sáirséil

de SÁIRSÉIL—XIde Sarsefield, Sarsfield, etc.; Norman 'de Sarnesfeld,' 'de Sarnefield,' 'de Chernesfend,' i.e., of Sarnesfelde (as the name is written in Domesday Book, where it is mentioned as one of the King's manors) in Herefordshire, the modern name of which I have failed to discover. This surname came into Ireland about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, when the family settled in Dublin, Kildare, Cork and Limerick. There were many distinguished men of the name, but it is to Patrick Sarsfield, Earl of Lucan, the celebrated commander in the wars of the Revolution, that it owes its fame in Irish history.
