de GAILLIDHE—XIde Gallweia, de Galloway, Galloway, Gallway, Galway, etc.; Norman 'de Gallweia,' i.e., of Galloway in the S.W. of Scotland; the name of an Anglo-Norman family who settled in Ireland in the early part of the 13th century. The Galways were wealthy merchant families in Limerick, Cork, Kinsale and Youghal.
