de FRÉIN, de FRÉINE—XIde Freyne, Freyne, Frein, Frayne, Freyne, Freney, Freeney, etc; Norman 'de la Freyne,' Latin 'de Fraxineto,' i.e., of the ash-tree (French frêne), from residence thereby; the name of an Anglo-Norman family who settled at an early period in Co. Kilkenny. The head of the family lived at Ballyreddy and was usually seneschal of Ormond.
