Bharain

BHARAIN—XI—Warren, Warrin, and, in parts of Kerry, Walsh; Norman 'de Warenne,' i.e., at the warren, or game-preserve, from residence thereby. This surname came into Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, and was not uncommon in Dublin, Meath, and other parts of Ireland. In East Kerry it has been strangely re-anglicised Walsh. Possibly the Warrens of that locality had two surnames; but at present they are called only by the one in Irish and the other in English. The adjectival form is Baranthach ('b' not aspirated).
