AIGHLMEAR—VIIIAilmar, Eilmer, Aylmer, Elmer, etc.; 'son of Ailmar' (Anglo-Saxon Æthelmaer); the name of a distinguished Anglo-Irish family who settled in the 13th century in Dublin, Meath and Kildare. In the wars of the 16th century, the Aylmers adhered to the Stuart cause, and many of them were in consequence attainted and lost their property.
