AGHAS—XIAase, Asshe, Ashe; Middle English 'atte Asse,' 'atte Ashe,' corrupted to 'de Ass,' 'de Asse,' i.e., at the ash, from residence beside an ash-tree. This form of the surname is common in Kerry and parts of Limerick. See Ais, de Nais, and de Nás.
