(Crest No. 258. Plate 49.)

THE McQuade family is descended from Milesius, King of Spain, through the line of his son Ir. The founder of the family was Caolbhach, the last King of Ulster of the Irian race. The ancient name was Quade and signifies “A Master.” The possessions of the sept were located in the present County of Monaghan.

The name is still numerous in Ireland, as also in the United States. The late General James McQuade, of Utica, N. Y., Mr. Peter McQuade, the prominent New York merchant, and the Most Rev. Dr. McQuaid, Bishop of Rochester, are descendants of this family.
