THE McHugh family is descended from Milesius, King of Spain, through the line of his son Ir. The founder of the family was Eachach, or Eocha, of the race of Ir. The sept belonged to the Clanna Rory Tribe, so called from its founder Heber Donn, son of Ir. The ancient name was McKeogh, meaning “Son of Speaker.”

The possessions of the sept were located in the present Counties of Donegal, Roscommon, Cavan, and Meath. In the latter county the McHughs were located in Muintir Tlamain, while the McHughs of Galway were chiefs of Clan Cosgraidh, a district on the eastern side of Lough Corib.
