O'Connell, although not himself a professed total abstainer, did all he could to promote the cause of temperance among his people, and lent every help in his power to the great movement led by its apostle, the noble-hearted Father Mathew. O'Connell was only at his zenith when the reign of William IV. came to an end, and the girl-queen Victoria was called to the throne.
