Tipperary County Directory 1862

From Thom's Irish Almanac and Offical Directory for 1862

TIPPERARY, an inland county in Munster province. Boundaries: N., Galway and King's; E., King's, Queen's, and Kilkenny; S., Waterford; W., Cork, Limerick, Clare, and Galway. Greatest length, N. and S., 70 miles; greatest breadth, E. and W., 40 miles; comprising an area of 1,659 square miles, or 1,061,731 acres; of which 843,887 are arable, 178,183 uncultivated, 23,779 in plantations, 2,359 in towns, and 13,523 underwater. The surface rises into the mountains of Knockmeledown, the Galtees, and Slievenaman in the S., the group of which Keeperhill is the principal in the W., and into the Slievardagh hills, E. The soil of the level country is a rich calcareous loam, of extraordinary fertility, particularly in the tract called the Golden Vein, extending from Limerick to the confines of Kilkenny county, and in the centre of which is Tipperary town, and in another similar tract of level ground, in the Ormond baronies. The Suir and Nore rise in the Devil's Bit mountain, near Templemore; the former, for the greater part of its course, running through the county; the Shannon forms part of its western boundary. The subsoil is clay-slate in the mountain districts, and limestone in the more level tracts, which form part of the great central plain of Ireland, and include some branches of the Bog of Allen. The mineral productions are coal, copper, and lead; zinc in large quantities has lately been discovered at Silvermines; slates of a good quality are extensively raised near Killaloe; copper at Hollyford and lead at Shallee are found most abundantly; the lead is rich in silver. The population in 1841 was 435,553; 364,261 in the rural, and 71,292 in the civic district; and in 1861 the total population of the county was 247,496, being a decrease of 188,057. The occupations are almost wholly agricultural. The produce is principally corn; wheat is grown in large quantities and of superior quality; dairies are numerous, affording an export of large quantities of butter. Flour and meal are also largely manufactured and exported. The woollen trade, which flourished in the southern part, is nearly extinct.

The county is divided into 2 ridings, N. and S.; the North consists of 6 baronies, Ormond Lower and Upper, Owney and Arra, Ikerrin, Eliogarty, and Kilnemanagh Upper. The South Riding has also 6 baronies, Slievardagh, Kilnemanagh Lower, Middlethird, Clanwilliam, and Iffa and Offa East and West, and contains 193 parishes. It is in the dioceses of Cashel, Emly, Killaloe, and Lismore. The principal towns are, Clonmel, population in 1861, 11,104; Nenagh, 6,282; Carrick-on-Suir, 4,986; Thurles, 4,788; Tipperary, 5,907; Cashel, 4,317; Roscrea, 3,543; Fethard, 2,301; Caher, 3,068; Templemore, 2,973. The county returns 4 members to Parliament, 2 for the county at large, constituency in 1859, 9,526; and 1 each for the boroughs of Cashel and Clonmel, constituencies, 147 and 253. It is in the Leinster Circuit. The Assizes for the North Riding are held in Nenagh, and for the South, in Clonmel. The county is within the military district of Cork; and there are Barrack stations at Nenagh, Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles, Caher, Bansha, Caher Castle, Carrick-on-Suir, Cashel, Clonmel, Fethard, and Tipperary.

The net annual value of property in the county under the Tenement Valuation Act, is £665,059.
