Smíst

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

SMÍST—XII or XI—Smeche, Smyche, Smytche, Smythes, Smeeth, Smiddy, Smithwick; Middle English 'Smeche,' apparently for 'Smethe,' i.e., smooth, polished, suave, but Smíst has evidently been regarded as in some way connected with Smidighe (which see), and so the origin may be 'at the smithies.' It is a not uncommon surname in the neighbourhood of Youghal.
