Ó MAOLCHAOIN—IO Mulchine, O Mulkyne, O Mulqueen, O Mulquin, Mulkeen, Mulqueen, Mulquin; 'descendant of Maolcaoin' (gentle chief); the name of a bardic family in Thomond. The Four Masters, under the year 1096, record the death of Ua Maelcain, ollav of the Dal gCais. The name is still well known in Thomond, and is also current in parts of Connacht. Ó Maolchaoine (which see) is a variant.
