Ó hUIDHRÍN—IO Heerine, O Herine, O Heverine, O Heveren, O Hevren, Hearon, Heron, Hearn, Herne, Heveran, Heveron, Hefferan, Heffron, &c.; 'descendant of Uidhrín' (diminutive of odhar, pale, dark-grey); the name of an Offaly family, still extant in Leinster and Munster, but its anglicised forms can hardly be now distinguished from those of several other surnames, as: Ó hEachthigheirn, Ó hIfearnáin, Ó hÉimhrín, Ó hAmhráin, and Ó hEaráin, which see. To this family, no doubt, belonged the learned historian, Giolla na Naomh O hUidhrin, who completed the celebrated poem on the families of Ireland which had been commenced by John O Dubhagain.
