Ó CUANÁIN—IO Cownan, Coonan, (Conan); 'descendant of Cuanán' (diminutive of Cuan); the name of a family formerly seated at Dunbeakin in the parish of Kilmacshalgan, Co. Sligo, but no longer found in that district. It is still extant, however, in parts of Leinster. Isaac O Cuanain was Bishop of Ely and Roscrea about the middle of the 12th century.
