Ó CUAGÁIN—IO Choogan, O Cowgan, O Cogan, Coogan, Cogan; 'descendant of Cuagán'; the name of a family of the Ui Maine in Co. Galway, of the same stock as the O'Maddens. Before the end of the 16th century it had ramified into Offaly, Kildare and Kilkenny. Ó Cuagáin was also the name of a Leitrim family who were anciently chiefs of Cinel Duachain, but apparently long extinct.
