Ó CRÓNGHAILE—IO Cronowly, O Cronully, Cronelly, Cranley; 'descendant of Crónghal' (compound of crón, brown, and gal, valour, an old Irish personal name); the name of an old Galway family who were coarbs of St. Grellan, patron of Ui Maine, and keepers of that saint's crozier, which was wont to be carried in battle by the king of Ui Maine. By the end of the 16th century, some of the family had crossed the Shannon into Offaly and Ormond.
