Ó COSCRAIGH—IO Coskry, O Cosgra, Cosgry, Coskery, Coskerry, Cuskery, Cosgriff, Cosgrive, Cosgreve, (Cosgreave, Cosgrave, Cosgrove); 'descendant of Coscrach' (victorious); the name (1) of a Wicklow family who were lords of Feara Cualann, comprising the manor of Powerscourt, until dispossessed soon after the Anglo-Norman invasion by the O'Tooles and O'Byrnes; (2) of a Monaghan family who were anciently chiefs of Feara Rois, in the neighbourhood of Carrickmacross; and (3) of a Galway family who belonged to the Ui Maine race, and are of the same stock as the O'Maddens. The name is now generally anglicised Cosgrave and Cosgrove.
