Ó CEARNAIGH—IO Carny, O'Kearney, Carney, Kearney, &c.; 'descendant of Cearnach ' (victorious); the name (1) of a Dalcassian family who in later times attained to a high position at Cashel; (2) of a family of Ui Fiachrach in Co. Mayo who formerly held extensive possessions in the parishes of Moynulla and Balla; and (3) of an ecclesiastical family who were formerly erenaghs of Derry. The name cannot now always be distinguished from Ó Ceithearnaigh, which see.
