Ó Caomhánaigh

Ó CAOMHÁNAIGH—I—Cavanagh, Kavanagh, Keaveny, Kevany, (Kevane, Kevans); 'descendant of Caomhánach' (derivative of Caomhán). This surname, which is common in the spoken language of Connacht and West Munster, appears everywhere side by side with Ó Caomháin (which see), of which it seems to be merely a modern variant. Ó Caomhánaigh is also sometimes, but incorrectly, used for the surname Caomhánach which see. I have failed to discover any early instance, Irish or English, of this surname.
